Dieses Bergkloster, mit dessen Errichtung kurz nach dem Jahr 1000 begonnen wurde, gehört zu den großen Zentren der Verehrung des Erzengels Michael in Europa. Es liegt auf jener eigentümlichen Michael-Diagonalen, die Europa quer durchschneidet, von Monte Sant'Angelo in Apulien über Mont-Saint-Michel in der Normandie und Mount-St.-Michael in Cornwall bis Skellig Michael an der Küste von Kerry in Irland. This mountain-top monastery in the Piemont alps was built shortly after the year 1000 A.D. Being one of the important sites in Europe where the archangel Michael is venerated, it is situated on the mysterious diagonal of St. Michael which straight through Europe, from Monte Sant'Angelo in Apulia, Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, Mount-St.-Michael in Cornwall to Skellig Michael off Ireland's Kerry coast.
